Work the way that works for you

Mindset, motivation and momentum: How you work is a major factor

How I feel about work is often impacted by when and where I work.

It’s just like a screaming baby and turbulence’ could make someone enjoy a first-class flight less.

While I’ve made it work from anywhere over the years – tethering from a transit station to working on the floor next to an outlet at a conference – I’ve moved towards settings that support the kind of work I’m actually doing at the time.

Who you surround yourself can also be a major factor.

Whether it’s good friends, fellow creative entrepreneurs (or both), the opportunity to work together even on separate things is always worth it. The good energy and ideas flowing (along with some good matcha) is a perfect combination. Some go as far as saying it’s not what you do, but how you do it and who you do it with, that makes your work day a winner. For me, what I’m actually working on matters too, especially in the long-term, but that’s all in addition.

Create space to think, reflect and plan.

Another big part of this is taking time to think, reflect, brainstorm, plan and work through problems. Creating space can tough today. Physically changing your environment helps change your thinking and focus. It also helps switch focuses – for me that can be changing from meeting mode to teaching mode to strategy mode to planning mode.

But it looks different for everyone, even if you’re at the same company or in the same role. Some people can’t function without multiple screens, others prefer to be on a walking pad/treadmill during meetings, and others thrive in-person. Some need music at a certain beat, others prefer background noise, while some need silence to do their best work.

Over a decade in to entrepreneurship and I’m still continuously inspired by the people and places I interact with along the way. This year I’m making a conscious effort to bring the right people together and collaborate on great work.

Pumped about a new year of choosing more of where, when and with who I work! (Some my top perks of entrepreneurship).

What’s your favourite way to work?
